The Summer

Swing

A Summer thunderstorm is forecast to roll in this evening. The skies over North Idaho are overcast, the big brass sprinklers are quenching a thirsty orchard, and our resident ducks decided for a mid-Summer hatching. If you've never seen Indian Runner ducklings exploring their world, I highly suggest it. One of our Nigerian Dwarf does is awaiting a brand new kid any hour, and Elsie our Holestein/Jersey dairy cow is growing day by day, with a Jersey calf arriving in January. Close to twenty heritage piglets arrive on August 2nd and we'll be busy raising them out in our wooded acreage over the next several months for some hungry, eager customers.

We've sold off all but three of our ADGA Registered Nigerian Dwarf Does in preparations for a late Summer arrival of horses. The girls and I have talked about it for years, and we've finally convinced Erreck that it's do or die time. The girls only have so many more years at home with us, and we want to make them count. It is definitely a different season. A season of watching our girls trade out all the physical proof of childhood & tween existence, replacing it with posters of Johnny Cash, horses, cowgirl hats, and prints of their favorite current rodeo stars. We knew these days would arrive and yet still find ourselves utterly unprepared for them to grow up and out.

While we may still be deciding what family adventures we want to take this Summer before the first day of school rolls around, we also realize the days continue to be marked off the calendar all too quickly. Evidence of the Autumn season is cropping up everywhere you look, and this means it is time for some grand planning.

We have March 2025 heritage hog reservations open right now and are beginning the planning for our second annual History Harvest Apple Tasting & Orchard Table Dinner. The maiden event in Fall of 2023 was an intimate gathering of community, sharing hyper-locally grown food and learning about our preservation orchard first-hand by storytelling and apple-tasting.  If you'd like to get an exclusive invitation to this dinner when the date drops, you'll want to subscribe to our Orchard News ASAP.

Despite a poor bloom this year, several trees
are growing some beautiful antique apples for this Autumn.
